On LightSpray Cloudmonster 3 Hyper: Race Tech, Now for Training

The On LightSpray Cloudmonster 3 Hyper takes one of the most talked-about trainers right now and strips it back to its core.

We’ve only just seen the standard Cloudmonster 3 Hyper land, and that already pushed On into a more performance-focused space. The LightSpray version builds on that, but changes how the shoe is constructed and how it feels on foot.

It’s lighter, more dialled in, and a bit more specific in where it fits.

LightSpray moves beyond race day

The LightSpray™ upper isn’t new. It first showed up on the Cloudboom Strike LS race shoe in 2025.

That made sense at the time. It was built purely for racing where reducing weight and removing excess material matters most.

What’s different here is that same construction now sits on a shoe designed for regular training use. Not just race day. Not just short efforts.

This is something you can take into longer runs, sessions, and faster days across the week. That shift makes it far more relevant for most runners.

Fit and upper feel

The upper is:

  • seamless
  • laceless
  • moulded into shape rather than stitched together

Compared to the standard Cloudmonster 3 Hyper:

  • it feels more structured through the midfoot
  • there is less room to adjust fit
  • it holds the foot in place more consistently

There is less give than the standard version. Once you’re in, that fit stays the same for the entire run.

If you usually rely on lacing to fine-tune pressure or volume, the standard version will be easier to work with. If you prefer a set and forget fit, this feels cleaner.

Weight and build

The LightSpray version is noticeably lighter.

  • Cloudmonster 3 Hyper: 253g
  • LightSpray Cloudmonster 3 Hyper: 205g, showcasing the weight savings from the LightSpray upper

That reduction is not just on paper. It’s noticeable when you start to run faster or hold pace over distance.

The construction is also simplified. Fewer components and less layering means less bulk overall.

Underfoot comparison

Both versions share the same platform:

  • 45mm heel / 39mm forefoot stack
  • 6mm drop
  • Helion™ HF foam
  • CloudTec® cushioning
  • Rocker geometry that rolls you forward

So the ride is familiar across both.

You still get:

  • strong rebound
  • smooth transitions
  • enough stability for the stack height

The main difference comes from how the upper interacts with that platform.

Where it fits in your rotation

If you’re running an On rotation right now, it might look something like:

  • Cloudsurfer or Cloudrunner for easy and recovery days
  • Cloudmonster 3 for general mileage
  • Cloudmonster 3 Hyper for long runs and steady efforts
  • Cloudboom Strike for race day

The LightSpray Cloudmonster 3 Hyper sits between the Hyper and the race option.

It works best for:

  • long runs where you want to keep things moving
  • progression runs where pace builds across the session
  • workouts that sit below full race intensity

Where the LightSpray version stands out is when you are trying to hold a pace for longer. The lighter build and more secure fit make it easier to stay consistent without feeling weighed down.

Choosing between the two

Cloudmonster 3 Hyper:

  • more adaptable across paces
  • easier fit adjustment
  • better for mixed use

LightSpray Cloudmonster 3 Hyper:

  • lighter overall
  • more locked-in feel
  • better suited to faster running and longer efforts at pace

Final thoughts

We’ve already seen this upper work in a race shoe. Bringing it into a training model makes it more usable, but also more specific.

If you want one shoe to stretch from long runs to tempo and race efforts, this could be the one for you.
